Things to see along the River Thames

21/01/2019

London’s iconic River Thames stretches 215 miles, passing through Oxford, Windsor, and err… Foulness Point. But we think the best bits are in London town. London Shared has some amazing homes to rent near the Thames, so we’ve put together some highlights for things to see and do in our favourite parts of the capital.

Tate Modern

The Tate Modern is simply one of the world’s great galleries. Strolling through the vast turbine hall of the converted Bankside Power Station is a spectacle in itself. And that’s before you’ve checked out the permanent Picasso collection, or skipped straight to prosecco in the terrace bar overlooking the Thames. By night, the popular Tate Late sessions see the hall turn into an impromptu dance floor with food, cocktails and no entrance fee. In the wee hours it’s an easy Uber ride home to places like Brixton or Tooting, so it’s no wonder so many bright young things are embracing the beautiful south.

Battersea Park

London has no shortage of gorgeous green spaces, but Battersea Park is one of our favourites. Stroll over Chelsea Bridge and suddenly you’re in a urban oasis with a boating lake, chilled cafe and a much-loved peace pagoda. It’s also a great spot to take family or friends when they come to visit. It’s even got a zoo and a crazy golf course — enough said. Read more about Battersea and discover what the fuss is all about.

Borough Market

London’s oldest food market is the beating heart of the South Bank. Here in foodie heaven you can sample flavours from around the world, from Dutch cheeses to Monmouth coffee and spices from the Caribbean. Walk under the railway bridge through the cobbled criss-cross of traders and try NOT to fall in love with the place. Whether you’ve got a sweet tooth or a savoury side, Borough Market is a tourist attraction that even locals can’t help but love.

Kew Gardens

These beautiful botanical gardens are one of the best things to see in south-west London. Climb the ornate stairwells of the warm and toasty Palm House and check out the tropical trees — seriously Instagrammable — or if you’ve got a head for heights, get the best view of the gardens from the treetop walkway. Pop over the river to Chiswick if you’re hankering for urban life again, and you’ll see the amazing variety south-west London has to offer.

Hammersmith riverside

When most people think of Hammersmith, they probably think of the bustling shopping streets, or flagship venues like the Apollo or Lyric Theatre. But tucked away down by the Thames is the historic old Hammersmith, a one-time fishing village with quaint pubs like The Dove still standing, and the epic Hammersmith Bridge where you can walk into beautiful Barnes. Check out our guide to Hammersmith and discover why there’s more to W6 than meets the eye.
